Product Description Cats can be difficult to understand. They often seem secretive, aloof, and maddeningly independent. But they also earn deep love and devotion from millions of cat owners who cherish that incomparable feline spirit. For cat lovers everywhere, pet expert Arden Moore explores cat behavior in an inviting, browsable Q&A format. She answers the questions that come up again and again among devoted cat owners, opening an intriguing window on the feline brain and physiology.
How, for example, can a cat in deep sleep three rooms away from the kitchen come zooming in within seconds of the refrigerator door opening? It's not just instinct. Cats really do have amazing hearing. Their ears are perfectly designed to pick up more sound vibrations and at higher frequencies than either humans or even dogs. And what does it mean when a cat's tail swishes slowly from side to side? That cat is probably getting ready to pounce on a mouse—either a toy or the real thing. Tail swishing is part of the cat's predatory positioning.
In addition to explaining why cats do what they do, Moore shows readers how to prevent many common feline problems. Her practical advice and workable solutions help cat owners work with their pets to banish bad litter box habits, nighttime howling, and destructive clawing. Even finicky eaters can become feline gourmands with a little gentle encouragement.
There are hundreds of tiny quirks and kooky habits that make a cat a cat. This sturdy, fun-to-read handbook explains those catticisms and opens every cat lover's eyes to the complexity of feline behavior. To know them is to love them!

Great book and I would reccommend this to other readers. I should have gotten this book when I first got my cat 2 years ago instead of wasting my money on Kittens/Cats for Dummies.
Don't kill the cat! Read this book instead... September 25, 2008 marcia (Laguna Niguel, CA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Finally. Real reasons why my two 14-year-old male cats (littermates)were missing the litterbox -- and using the rug in the living room. And the cat fights at meal time were just driving me nuts. I mean, these cats are senior and I was fearful one of them would stroke out on me. Taking the cats out for a walk was becoming a burden. The result? I changed MY behavior and presto! No more fights, no more deposits in the LR, wonderful cat walks. All I had to do was to acknowledge the Alpha Male first when entering, exiting the house, and serving him his meal first at mealtime. Oh, yeah. I changed the litter to a nice-smelling litter! The boys hated it. Thanks Arden! Simple solutions that worked for me. Remember, one size does not fit all -- you may have to try more than one solution for the behavior you want to change, and the result tells you what is working. The ANSWER (book) may surprise you.
So much insight that I had never considered! July 13, 2008 DTinIndy (Indianapolis, IN) Yes, it is hard to say that a book has the answers for everything, so I can only say that it had answers to our problems. I moved my cat into a new house, where I thought the laundry room in the finished basement would be the best place for the litter box. Well, he (the cat) has been trying to tell me for weeks now (by pooping on the carpet, that is) that he doesn't like it there, and thanks to the good help of this book, I can now regain some sanity in our new house! As a fairly new cat owner, the book helped me figure out that I should move the box to a new location and probably add a second box on the upstairs level. Problem fixed! In addition to that, the book was entertaining and I read it from cover to cover, just to make sure I wasn't missing any other signs! Highly recommended.
Cat People Will Love This Book July 3, 2008 Watstone (Orlando, FL United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had read a good review of this book in Cat Fancy magazine, so I thought I would order it, thinking that it probably wouldn't teach me very much. How wrong I was. I learned so much about my cat from this book, and I recommend it highly to any cat owner that has wondered why his/her cat acts the way it does. The author is knowledgable, and this book will have a permanent spot in my library.
