Great book regardless of the size of your dog. April 17, 2008 Whether you've got a toy breed or not, this book is an EXCELLENT resource for the competitve obedience enthusiast. In addition to lots of sound training advice, the authors give lots of great SPECIFIC advice about footwork and handling that isn't found in most general obedience books, which focus entirely on the dog's performance, rather than regarding obedience as the team sport it truly is.
Great for Small Dog Training April 1, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in training and wants to compete in obedience with a small dog. I am training my first small dog and realized I couldn't train him the same way as my Golden Retrievers. This book is jam packed with useful information and will take you from Novice A through Utility. It outlines a complete training program and arranges skills by catagory instead of training just for Novice, then for Open, etc. It is written in a clear and concise manner that can be understood by beginners, yet I wouldn't call this a "beginners" book only. All training is done using positive reinforcement. It really helps keep dogs "up" so that trainig isn't boring. There is a section on Puppy or Pre-training so even if you have an older dog, the methods can still be applied. It explains what equipment is necessary and honestly covers the difficulties of showing a small dog vs. the typical larger breeds seen in competetive obedience. If you are really serious about competitive obedience, I highly recommend the video set by the same title. It has even more information and gives great visuals to go with the book. If you are just considering showing your small dog in OB, this is a great book to give you an idea of what it takes.
