 Wow, a book by a man who obviously loves Swissys May 31, 1999

Just got the book after waiting for a reprint from the publisher. It is full of wonderful personal experiences and pictures that show these "magnificent beasts" as he calls them, in a wonderful light. I have owned Swissys for years and never could express how great they are. Mr. Barton did a wonderful job here. I hope he considers writing another book of his experiences soon.

Finally, a book on the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog written by an actual breeder. As a novice "Swissy" owner I can identify with so many of Mr. Barton's comments. Having read both breed specific books I find that this book gives more bang for the buck in terms of information and quality. I especially enjoyed the wonderful photos of so many different Swissys.

Color pictures are nice but the content of this book is pretty generic. The majority of the text could have been taken from a general dog book with a handful of Swissy-specific info sprinkled in. This book is not as good as "An Introduction to the GSMD."

We purchased this book in anticipation of our Swissy's arrival in the next few months (Spring '99). The book includes all the information I spent the last few months researching! Training, selection, care, health, and even pulling are all covered with plenty of detail. I would reccomend this book to anyone looking to learn more about these dogs. Even better, the Sire of our puppy was one of the dogs shown in the book! If you need more information, the Discovery Channel's Animal Planet has a show called "Breed: All About It" that featured Swissy's in an episode (check TV listings).

As a prospective dog owner, looking for the perfect breed is difficult, but Mr. Barton's explanation of the GSMD and his high-quality photography easily convinced me that the GSMD was the right choice. If you have never heard of the GSMD, this is also a great way to learn of how the breed was saved from near extinction. What a loss that would have been! Easily readable and enjoyable, this book made my decision easy. Job well done.
