Praise for the Dog Whisperer January 4, 2007 RBT Dallas (Dallas, Texas) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I see what I consider an excessive amount of criticism being hurled in Cesar's direction, so much so that I had to say something. First off, I have yet to encounter any person who has had more success in training a cross-section of canines as Cesar has. Moreover, if Cesar's methods did not work, people would not listen, and he'd have no audience! Bottom line: They are dogs, people!!! Hello! Moreover, give the man some credit for sharing his methods with the rest of the world. They seem to be working for some dogs and their owners. If you think you can do better, go out and get a TV show of your own and show the world your techniques. Otherwise, please show some courtesy and clam up. Cesar does a good job. In sum, keep up the good work, Cesar!
fake "Dog Whisperer" - studious ignorance September 17, 2006 CelticRaven7 14 out of 95 found this review helpful
Cesar Milan, the so-called 'dog whisperer', bases his training methods on a dog behavior model that is so out of date as to be archaic - from the dinosaur age. He teaches that dogs base all their behavior on their pack status, and that you need to use painful 'corrections' to convince them that you are Alpha. This idea hasn't the slightest shred of evidence going for it. Yes, dogs do have dominance roles, but that hasn't the slightest thing to do with problem behaviors. Dogs do 'bad' doggy behaviors because they work. Dog guards his food bowl? Dog wants to keep food and knows that growling keeps you away. Dog pulls on the leash? Dog wants to get somewhere faster and knows that pulling speeds things up. The dog doesn't care whether or not you're alpha; he only cares that what he's doing works to get him what he wants. Technically, Cesar's methods work. But they use force, fear, and pain to teach the dog, when you can teach the same things faster with the proper positive motivation and non-forceful techniques. I have three hyper, active, highly driven Border Collies, and they're all very obedient and mannerly. They don't haul me around the leash, nor do they leap at guests, nor do they ignore me when I tell them something. And I don't need to be 'Alpha' to get them that way; neither does anyone else. I strongly suggest that you don't buy this item. Good books to start with are Karen Pryor's 'Getting Started: Clicker Training for Dogs', Melissa Alexander's 'Click for Joy!' (also with a great problem solving section), and Jean Donaldson's 'The Culture Clash'. You can easily have a happy, obedient, well behaved dog without causing him fear and pain.
The Dog Shouter? September 1, 2006 Tracey (Gainesville, GA) 13 out of 68 found this review helpful
If you love your dog, and wish to truly earn his respect and trust, please resist the pull of the glamour and glitz of Mr. Milan's t.v. shows, and don't bother buying this book. His very basic premise of exercise, training and love remain the only idea I agree with as a trainer and behaviorist, myself. Mr. Milan ignores prevailing research by using his forceful "choke and drag" methods; these methods can create different problems ultimately. Compare this book to POSITIVE PERSPECTIVES: Love Your Dog, Train Your Dog, by Pat Miller. You will create well-behaved pets through a form of benign leadership, clear communication, love, and trust to form a willing relationship using Ms. Miller's methods. Patricia McConnell, PhD., and Karen London, PhD. have written many fabulous and informative books on training and behavioral issues such as THE CAUTIOUS CANINE, FEISTY FIDO, I'LL BE HOME SOON, WAY TO GO! and FEELING OUTNUMBERED? These books are short, easy to read and packed with lots of useful, realistic tips. If you truly love your dog--please stay away from this book.
More of the same . . . August 24, 2006 T. Williams 65 out of 71 found this review helpful
Being a fan of Cesar, I expected something new and informative. This DVD is nothing more than a bunch of selected episodes from his series. So, if you already have his episodes on DVD, don't buy this, unless you want the aggression-specific episodes on one disk.
Dog Whisperer With Cesar Millan - Aggression July 25, 2006 J. B. Clark (Cleveland, OH USA) 38 out of 43 found this review helpful
Cesar's techniques echoed what I was taught as a dog trainer in my youth. I had forgotten, or at least gotten a little lax in adherence to these principals. Cesar's tips in this video are easy and basic elements to successful training. Identify yourself as the pack leader, then training proceeds much more smoothly. We the people need to treat the dogs as dogs, not as people. With that, there is still plenty of time for love, hugs and kisses, after the work is done. This is an excellent resource for dog owners of any caliber.
