This is one of the best books I've read on the subject. McConnell's book is not a "how to" training book, but rather an insightful, well-written book about canine behavior. (She's an ethologist and a certified animal behaviorist specializing in aggression.)I also highly recommend the enormously useful book "Understanding 'Dog Mind,'" by Bonnie Bergin. This is perhaps the single best book ever written on canine behavior and training. (Bergin pioneered the "service dog" concept and founded the first and largest organization training service dogs for the disabled.)
A Great Book! A Wonderful Read! August 12, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've never written this about a Non-Fiction Book, but "The Other End of the Leash" is so good you can't put it down and don't want it to end!
Excellent July 31, 2002 Macy Mills (Toronto, Canada) My library of dog books is growing steadily, and this book is the latest addition. It is also the only one that I have read from cover to cover. Unlike other dog training books that I have read, this book does not give you step by step instructions on how to solve certain dog behavioural issues. Instead, Dr. McConnell, in fluid and conversational prose, reveals to readers what years of research and experience have taught her about dog behaviours. She draws parallels between dogs and humans, and also demonstrates, through stories, how humans often mis-read and mis-communicate with our doggie partners. The real-life stories are sometimes funny, sometimes bittersweet, and sometimes downright sad, but they all serve a purpose - to teach us why dogs behave the ways they do, and how us humans can improve and enhance our relationships with our canine friends by having a better and deeper understanding of how they communicate. An excellent read and certainly a critical addition to a dog-lover's library.
Funny, happy, sad, enligtening! July 29, 2002 Dr. Doug Swanson (LaCrosse, Wisc.) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
If you have a dog, you need to get this book. McConnell points out so clearly why (many times) it's not poor innocent us, suffering through with a nutso dog... in fact, it's the stuff WE DO that's making the dog nutso. I have three dogs and am so glad I read this book. Wow. Well-written. Happy in some places; sad in others. Very enlightening. I learned a lot from it- about me, and about my dogs.
Essential Training Tool! July 2, 2002 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
This book is dog language defined. Examples of facial expressions that preceed behaviors and the smallest physical cues that you can give your dog to stop or encourage a behavior have the reader engaged from chapter to chapter. The author makes it clear that observation is key to understanding your dog.
