Very useful for both tricks and behavioral problems September 30, 2004 D. Lee (New York, NY) 57 out of 57 found this review helpful
I initially bought this book for teaching my dog tricks, but then I discovered that almost half of the book is devoted to how to turn your rambunctious puppy into a well-behaved dog. Gerilyn's methods are all positive reinforcement and she promotes clicker training, which I think is great. Anyways this book has become my bible, both for teaching my dog new tricks and to solve any behavioral problems that crop up now and then.
Great Book!!! January 1, 2004 41 out of 44 found this review helpful
I got this book for my new dog and it is wonderful. I have never heard of clicker training before and this book explained it wonderfully. I got a clicker and my dog is loving the training(so am I) (we are doing kindergarten tricks)and she has learned a lot. I have already looked at the advanced tricks and can't wait to get there. The author puts everything in an easy format so it is easy to learn and fun for all ages with their dogs. The tricks are workable(at least they are for me and my dog)with the methods explained and of course fun is stressed throughout the book and it is fun.
Great tricks made easy! October 9, 2003 27 out of 28 found this review helpful
I bought this book to train my Mini Schnauzer and I have found it very helpful! The tricks are fun, showy, and easy for your dog to learn. After each trick instruction, there is a tip that tells you what to do when the trick isn't working- I really like that part!I can't say my dog can do tons of tricks- I haven't had the book or my dog long enough, but she's already learned a handful of cute tricks and obedience. I do recommend this book for anyone who wants to teach tricks to their dog.
An enthusiastically recommended instructional guide February 11, 2003 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 32 out of 36 found this review helpful
The Everything Dog Training And Tricks Books by experienced dog trainer Gerilyn Bielakiewicz (cofounder of Canine University) is a thoroughly "user friendly" and enthusiastically recommended instructional guide to turning even the most mischievous and high spirited dog into a well-behaved canine companion. Clear and invaluable information will enable the reader to control their dog's unwanted behaviors, including successfully dealing with housebreaking, introductions, the use of a clicker, and walking on a leash. The Everything Dog Training And Tricks Books also provides clear information on teaching a dog such tricks as getting the phone, "kissing", pushing a baby carriage, waving and "high five". Enhanced with dozens of photographs, The Everything Dog Training And Tricks Books offers a wealth of training tips, tricks, and techniques that will solve virtually any behavior issue and have any dog and owner team playing games and having fun together.
Full of good advice and step-by-step directions November 14, 2002 (Disclaimer: I volunteer at Canine University, the author's dog-training school.)This is a fabulous book! This book brought home to me why it is important to teach dogs tricks in addition to "basic training." It makes training more fun for both the owner and the dog, and gives the dog something to do other than just behave :). I am a complete convert to clicker training. I had used positive reinforcement to do basic training with my dog, but after taking classes at Canine U and introducing my dog to a clicker, she became a "thinking dog" who is so much easier and fun to train.
